My name is Joshua Roy (yes, I have two first names), but you can call me, Josh! I’m only 5’5” on a good day. I studied physics at the University of Washington, got married my junior year, had my first kid senior year, graduated university and joined the Navy, had two more kids, resigned from active duty in 2021, joined the Navy Reserve, and became a User Experience Designer for Booz Allen Hamilton.
My motivation for design was deeply rooted in my personal struggles using outdated devices, programs, and methodologies while serving in the Navy. The world’s finest Navy fleeting with the world’s greatest warships uses technology and programs that lack basic functions like multi-select, scroll to zoom, dragging a map, SAVING A DOCUMENT, A POWER BUTTON. It was frustrating.
That aside, I was fortunate to have learned skills from the Navy that are applicable to User Experience Design (UXD):
You have to understand, connect, and level with your team.
Efficiency is indispensable, but pair it with fluidity and you’re a game-changer.
Every. Detail. Counts. and…
Everyone needs to be heard, treated fairly, and equally.
Every day is an opportunity to become a little bit better. You learn from your mistakes and do it again, but better.
Aside from UX, I enjoy spending quality time with family, the outdoors, indulging in local cuisine, fitness, photography, reading a book, manga and anime, and the occasional video game.
